About the Department
The Seaside Fire Department (SFD) provides emergency response and fire prevention services to the communities of Seaside and Del Rey Oaks. The SFD serves an area of 6,408 acres, with a 2016 population estimate of 34,312 for Seaside and 1,6831 for Del Rey Oaks.
SFD is an all hazards response agency providing fire, emergency medical services (basic life support) as well as local, state and federal wildland response. In addition, SFD operates a California State Office of Emergency Services (Cal OES) Type II Hazardous Material Vehicle. In cooperation with Cal OES, Salinas Fire Department and Monterey County Department of Environmental Health, SFD provides hazardous materials response and mitigation for all of Monterey and San Benito Counties as well as state-wide requests. Services are provided from one station by 25 full-time and 5 reserve firefighters staffing one first due engine, one first due quint and one incident command vehicle with an average annual call volume of 2896 calls for service.
Seaside Fire Department’s current daily staffing consists of:
- One Chief Officer assigned to unit 6201 or 6202
- Three or four persons assigned to the Engine Company
- Three or four persons assigned to the Truck Company
Core Services
Fire Suppression
Seaside Fire Department provides fire suppression services with the goal of controlling and/or extinguishing fires to protect people from injury and death and reduce property loss. A typical response to a structure fire in the City of Seaside consists of 5 firefighting apparatus and 1 Chief Officer (3 Seaside Fire Department Units [1 Fire Engine, 1 Ladder Truck, and 1 Chief Officer] and 3 automatic aid units [2 Fire Engines from Monterey Fire Department, 1 Fire Engine from Presidio of Monterey Fire Department]).
EMS
Seaside Fire Department provides Emergency Medical Services (EMS) with the goal of providing Basic Life Support (BLS) level care during calls for medical aid. Seaside Fire Department responds in conjunction with a paramedic ambulance and are capable of (but not limited to) airway management, oxygen delivery, bleeding control/shock management, immobilization of fractures, CPR with AED, and spinal immobilization. Seaside Fire Department does not transport patients to any hospital.
Hazardous Material Mitigation
Seaside Fire Department operates a Hazardous Materials (Hazmat) program with the goal of protecting the community from the hazards associated with the uncontrolled releases of hazardous and toxic materials. Seaside Fire operates a California Office of Emergency Services (Cal OES) Type II Hazmat apparatus that responds to incidents both within the City of Seaside and throughout the state on a mutual aid basis.
Public Education Program
Seaside Fire Department operates a Public Education Program with the goal of reducing fire risk in the community through public education. The program is directed towards all individuals who reside, work, or travel through Seaside regardless of age. Examples of this service include school field trips to the fire station, open house events, and other educational activities.
Community Risk Reduction (Fire Prevention)
Seaside Fire Department operates a Community Risk Reduction and Fire Prevention program with the goal of managing the risks unique to the City of Seaside. The program is comprehensive and includes both prevention and mitigation strategies such as life safety, hazard risk reduction, plan review, code compliance, and the detection, reporting, and control of fires.
Fire Investigation
Seaside Fire Department operates a Fire Investigation, Origin, and Cause Program with the goal of origin and cause investigation and subsequent classification of fires, explosions, and other emergency situations that endanger life and/or property.
Rescue - Basic & Technical
Seaside Fire Department operates a basic and technical rescue program with the goal of providing an adequate, effective, efficient, and safe program directed toward rescuing trapped or endangered persons from a life-endangering cause. Examples include confined space rescues, vehicle entrapments, and fires.
Domestic Preparedness Planning & Response
Seaside Fire Department operates an all-hazards preparedness program that includes a coordinated multi-agency response plan designed to protect the community from terrorist threats or attacks, major disasters, and other large-scale emergencies occurring at or in the immediate area.
